I first discovered synastry in my early 20s when I was caught up in a new, whirlwind romance. The chemistry was there, but the relationship brought up a lot of questions. Why did I feel so drawn to this person vs. someone else? He was very different from my previous boyfriend. Was it a past life thing? What was it? This was when a friend told me about relationship astrology, or synastry.
Your Astrological Map and Compass
When each of us comes into the physical world, from an astrological perspective, a sort of life map, or blueprint, is created. This map shows the position of the Earth at your location and time of birth in context to other planets and stars. This map is more commonly called your astrological birth chart or natal chart.
Having this map doesn’t mean everything is planned out though. We have free will after all. It also doesn’t mean you were born under good stars or bad stars. (I hate when astrologers focus on what they call “bad aspects.”)
Instead, it’s more like you were given a map and a compass. Your birth chart simply helps you to orient yourself as you start on your soul’s path here on Earth. It can help you navigate your journey through deeper karmic and relational understandings.
What synastry, or relationship astrology, does is explore how your birth chart relates to another person’s and the dynamic aspects of those planetary relationships.
The Blending of the Astrological Maps
Relationships can be one of our greatest teachers here on Earth. These soul connections help us to learn and evolve. Some relationship lessons are hard; some are beautiful and fulfilling.
Studying the signs that your planets are in, such as your Sun sign, Moon sign, Venus sign, etc., in comparison to another person’s can give you thought-provoking insights into the dynamics of the relationship.
For example, there might be a lot of sexual chemistry but communication is difficult. Or you might have a highly productive working relationship. Or, talking with each other comes easy.
Once I started exploring zodiac compatibility, not just with romantic partners but also family members, friends, and coworkers, I was taken aback by the uncanny insights.
The Roots of Synastry
The study of relationship astrology between two people is as old as astrology itself. For example, in ancient Greece, the idea of sympatheia, or cosmic interconnectedness, laid the foundation for an astrological view of relationships.
In Vedic traditions, astrologers drew up marriage compatibility charts to assess harmony and challenges that might occur with couples.
And during the Renaissance, astrologers studied planetary alignments to advise rulers and families and to give insights about political alliances.
Although techniques have evolved since ancient times, the impulse behind synastry remains the same: We’re drawn to understand the mysterious chemistry between people.
Luckily for us, today we can easily access birth charts and synastry compatibility reports online. In fact, you can try UniGuide’s free astrology compatibility calculator and get immediate insights.
How Synastry Works
A synastry reading begins by comparing two natal charts. These charts are calculated using each person’s birth date, time, and location. When you overlay one chart on top of another, the planets begin a kind of dialogue.
- Planets represent drives, needs, and expressions. For example, the Sun = identity, the Moon = emotions, Venus = love, and Mars = passion.
- Aspects describe the relationships between planets. Are they aligned in harmony (trine, sextile), tension (square, opposite), or do they blend powerfully (conjunct)?
- Houses show where one person’s planets land in another’s chart, highlighting areas of life that relationship energy flows into. For example, the 4th House = home, family, and emotional foundation. The 7th House governs partnerships, marriage, and close relationships, and so on.
The Beauty and the Challenge
One of the reasons I love synastry is that it doesn’t flatten relationships into simple “go” or “no go” answers. Instead, it reveals energy dynamics and patterns.
For example, you might discover that your chart and another’s highlight deep emotional resonance but also stubborn disagreements. That doesn’t mean the relationship is doomed. It means awareness can become a tool. Understanding your synastry can help you lean into strengths while finding constructive ways to navigate challenges.
Synastry Today
In today’s world of social media, dating apps, multiple shallow connections, and busy schedules, I feel that people still crave depth and substance in their relationships. (They might not realize it until they experience a deep connection and think, Where have you been my whole life!?)
Relationship astrology gives us a fun and intriguing way to explore those deeper dynamics, such as why some bonds are magnetic and why others challenge us to grow.
