Metatron’s Cube is a geometrical shape that’s composed of 13 equally-sized circles that interconnect. It’s a geometrical symbol that can be presented as a tw0- or three-dimensional design.
Yet, followers of sacred geometry believe that it can connect us to other, higher dimensions beyond the immediate physical world. Needless to say, Metatron’s Cube has profound symbolic and spiritual meanings.
On a spiritual and symbolic level, here are some of the concepts that Metraton’s Cube signifies:
Metraton is an archangel who is named in the Jewish religious text the Talmud.
An archangel is a highly enlightened and powerful being who is closely connected with God, Source Energy, or the Higher Power. In some religious texts, an archangel is a messenger, and even a warrior, of God and a protective entity.
Richard Heath, author of the book Sacred Geometry, Language of the Angels, describes angels as highly enlightened beings who transmit messages to us using numerical science.
In the case of Metraton, he was described in the Talmud as a scribe for God who brought messages to human beings. Metatron is recognized by Jews, Muslims, Christians, and other people of faith.
By some interpretations, Metraton is an archangel who experienced an earthly existence as a human. Some believe he was the prophet Enoch, who appears in the Torah and the Bible.1
Those who believe Enoch was an incarnation of Metatron say it was his human experience on Earth that enables him to easily communicate with us and to have us readily understand the messages he delivers from God.
Religious scholars still debate the origins and meaning of Archangel Metatron’s name. A few of the possible etymological meanings are:
Interestingly, while these translations come from different languages and have varying meanings, all of them are relevant to who Metraton is.
It was the 13th century Italian mathematician Leonardo Bigollo Pisano, also known as Leonardo Fibonacci, who named Metatron’s Cube for the archangel.
Pisano was an avid student of sacred geometry concepts. Like other notable philosophers Pythagoras and Plato, Pisano believed that the secrets to the Universe could be understood by numbers and mathematics.
One of his most famous discoveries was the Fibonacci Sequence, a mathematical pattern in which numbers in the sequence equal the sum of the two preceding numbers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, continuing to infinity.
The Fibonacci Sequence is related to another famous mathematical discovery – the Golden Ratio. Both of these patterns appear throughout the natural world and are manifested in the shape of spirals.
As Pisano avidly studied geometrical concepts, he experimented with different combinations of patterns, including the geometrical design that he came to call Metratron’s Cube. In so doing, he realized that the pattern contained all five of the Platonic Solids, which Plato described as the “building blocks” of the Universe.
The Platonic Solids are five distinct three-dimensional shapes. For those who believe in sacred geometry, all physical matter is fundamentally linked back to these shapes.
Each shape is the embodiment of what the ancient Greeks believed were the five elements that made up the Universe:
As you can imagine, when Pisano was experimenting with the combination of shapes that came to be known as Metatron’s Cube, and he realized that it incorporated all five of the Platonic Solids, he must have felt a divine connection.
Other sacred geometry concepts are connected to Metatron’s Cube. As mentioned above, followers of sacred geometry tie all of existence back to the 5 Platonic Solids. A foundational concept in the study of sacred geometry is that the Universe began with the creation of the Platonic Solid that is the octahedron.
The theory is that the Divine Creator built the shape and then spun it on its axis like a top. From there, a sphere began to form, which held the consciousness of the Creator. The Creator then made a second sphere, which intersected with the first.
These two spheres are represented by a symbol called a vesica piscis. Followers of sacred geometry believe these spheres were the blueprint for more complex structures.
From the two spheres, the Creator added a third sphere that interconnected with the first two, and then a fourth, a fifth, and so on.
This creation, which led to seven interconnected spheres, is illustrated in the Seed of Life symbol. This coincides with the story of creation in the Book of Genesis. According to the story, the Creator made the world in seven days.
The Seed of Life and the corresponding Flower of Life, which is a more complex evolution of the Seed of Life, are incorporated into Metatron’s Cube.
Thus, in the shape of Metrton’s Cube, Pisano saw the key to the creation of the Universe and the embodiment to all that the Universe is.
(Interestingly, the word Universe comes from the Latin uni, which means “one,” or “combined into one”, and versus, which means “turned.” This plays into this notion of a Creator creating the Universe by spinning it like a top.
On a spiritual level, as alluded to earlier, Metraton’s Cube represents the Universe’s fundamental structure as well as the divine harmony, balance, and interconnectedness of everything in our existence. It also represents creation by a Higher Power.
Some believe that in this design, Metatron is showing us our own connection to higher consciousness, Universal Wisdom, and God.
The esoteric form of Jewish mysticism known at the Kabbalah began to emerge in the 12th century.3 As with Pisano, Kabbalists saw in Metatron’s Cube a blueprint of creation.
For some followers of Kabbalah, Metatron is embodied in the Keter, or Crown, of the Kabbalah Tree of Life, also called the Sefirot. This reflects Metatron’s enlightened state of consciousness and connection to the divine.
In the symbol of Metraton’s Cube, there are 13 circles. This is also emblematic of Metraton’s close association with the Higher Power.
In the collection of interviews between world-renowned mythologist Joseph Campbell and journalist Bill Moyers, The Power of Myth, Campbell explains the omnipotent meaning of the number 13:
“The number thirteen is the number of transformation and rebirth. At the Last Supper, there were twelve apostles and one Christ, who was going to die and be reborn. Thirteen is the number of getting out of the field of the bounds of twelve and into the transcendent.”4
In essence, Metraton’s Cube is a gateway to our connection with God.

For example, in energy healing practices, Metatron’s Cube can be used to balance and align the chakras, or energy centers, in the body as it aids in harmonizing physical and spiritual well-being.

Metatron’s Cube is a symbol that is in harmony with traditional religious practices, from the aforementioned Judaism, Islam, and Christianity as well as Hinduism and Buddhism. It can also resonate with those who don’t identify with organized religion but are nonetheless spiritual.
As the complex interplay of lines and circles in Metatron’s Cube symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things, it reminds us of the union of the physical and spiritual worlds and how we transcend varying planes of existence. Its beauty and harmony can also remind us of the loving and positive forces that are at work in the Universe and that we have the capacity to tap into this positive energy.
