For the Zulu People, the chameleon is seen as a messenger for God and one of God’s favorite creatures.2
For the Bantu, however, the chameleon is associated with death and bad luck.
According to one folktale, God told the chameleon to go and tell people that they would never die. However, the chameleon moved slowly and stopped on his journey to have a snack. A mischievous lizard came along and overtook the chameleon. He then told the people that they would, in fact, die. As a result, the Bantu view both lizards and chameleons as bad omens and bad luck.3
Depictions of reptiles, other than snakes, are rare in ancient Egyptian artwork. However, chameleons were depicted on petroglyphs on a tomb at the site of el-Hosh, located on the west bank of the Nile.4
It’s unclear what the chameleon symbolized to the ancient Egyptians. However, we do know the ancient Egyptians believed that divine energy manifested through all living creatures.
Chameleons got their name from the Greek words khamai, which means “on the ground,” and leon, which means “lion.” Historians theorize the crest on the chameleon’s head reminded the Greeks of a lion’s mane.5
The Greeks associated the chameleon with the changing colors of the sky and the air element.6
Chameleons were present in the Middle East during biblical times. In the Bible, they are mentioned as unclean animals, like lizards and crocodiles, that should not be eaten.7
In modern times, from a religious sense, some might describe a chameleon as a person who switches their spiritual faiths without having a deep commitment to religious tenets.
For some Muslims, chameleons are viewed as Allah’s beautiful artwork.
However, as in other religions, some Muslims describe people who are not fully committed to their faith as cultural chameleons. For example, they might act like devout Muslims while in Muslim cultures but act differently in other cultures.8
In Hinduism, chameleons are compared to how different people might perceive God.
According to one folktale, a chameleon lived in a Kadamba tree outside of a village. One villager saw him and thought he saw a beautiful green lizard. So, he ran to get his friend to show him. When the villager brought his friend back to see the beautiful green lizard, it was gone, and his friend only saw a yellow lizard. Then, another friend came to see the lizard and he only saw a red one.
So, the men went to see a Sadhu, or holy man, who lived in the forest to ask him about the different lizards they had seen. The Sadhu explained that they all saw the same lizard. He then said, “Different people have their own view of God. However, God is still God.”9
Buddhism itself has been described as a chameleon religion because Buddhist philosophies and practices can be adapted to any religion or spiritual belief system.10
So, in this way the chameleon metaphor in Buddhism is a beautiful symbol as the chameleon embodies the ability to become one with whatever it connects with.
In conjunction with what has been written earlier, the chameleon has important spiritual meanings. Here are some of those associations:
1. Evidence of a Single Creator ā The chameleon’s curling tail, which looks like a spiral, is a pattern that repeats often in nature. For example, sunflowers, hurricanes, nautilus shells, and seahorses’ tails all have spiral patterns.
As I wrote about in my guide to angel numbers, spiral patterns follow a mathematical sequence called the Fibonacci Sequence. For those who believe in sacred geometry, these repeating patterns in nature are evidence of intelligent design by a single creator.
2. Spiritual Awareness ā As mentioned earlier, the chameleon has special eyes, which can look in different directions at the same time. On a spiritual level, this represents the idea of looking at the world with an open-minded view. This is the opposite of religious fundamentalism, which can stunt spiritual growth because it limits consciousness. The chameleon embodies the idea of expanded spiritual awareness.

Spiritual Transformation ā Because they can change color and are symbols of transformation, chameleon spiritual meaning also represents the idea that we are all in the process of spiritual growth and evolution. The chameleon represents the idea that through spiritual exploration and growth, we can transform our lives and become more enlightened.
