Ladies, if you haven’t noticed yet, we’re living in the Golden Age of Vegan Sandals because I’ve never seen such an amazing selection of women’s sandals that are leather-free.
Before we start looking at these lovelies, can we all just take a moment to give a big, standing ovation to all of the animal advocates out there who have gotten us to this point in human evolution? That includes the nonprofits – PETA, The Humane Society, Mercy for Animals, Direct Action Everywhere, and many others – plus, the activists, the designers, and all of you who ever went to a shoe website, typed in the word “vegan,” and refused to buy anything if it yielded zero results. Well done! Thankfully, today, there are lots of cute ladies’ vegan sandals to choose from.
We do still have some evolving to do when it comes to making sandals that are also eco-friendly. While there are now a number of great brands making vegan flip flops that are made with recycled and other eco-friendly materials, when it comes to sandals, it’s still hard to find styles made with sustainable materials.
One positive thing I’ve learned since doing my research on vegan sandals and shoes is that these days it’s less common for the adhesives used in shoes to be made with animal products. The reason is that synthetic glues simply perform better – they’re more flexible and last longer than the glues that contained animal byproducts. Needless to say, this is good news for animals and those of us who look for vegan sandals and shoes.

Wedge and Platform Sandals
Next, I’ll show you some really cute women’s vegan wedge sandals and platform sandals. But first, a little history lesson…
Back in the day, when it was hard to find stylish vegan sandals, compassionate women could always turn to espadrilles. Made with cotton fabric and braided jute, espadrilles were vegan way before vegan was cool. And when the platform wedge heel came along, coupled with laces wrapping up feminine legs – forget it – even men who didn’t have foot fetishes suddenly had foot fetishes.
But when were wedge heels invented?
According to Renee Jacques in the Huffington Post, wedge heel shoes were invented in the 1940s by the famous Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo. Because of World War II era sanctions against Italy, the designer was unable to acquire the steel that was normally used in the heels of his shoes. “I experimented with pieces of Sardinian cork,” wrote Mr. Ferragamo, “pushing and gluing and fixing and trimming until the entire space between the sole and the heel was blocked solid.” Testament to his ingenious design skills, the new style quickly took off and, as you’ll see in this post, it shows no sign of becoming passé.
Unfortunately, you won’t find any wedge sandals by Ferragamo in this post. Why? You guessed it – I couldn’t find any by Ferragamo that are vegan. Sadly, Mr. Ferragamo passed away in the 1960s, too soon to experience the vegan footwear revolution that is, well – afoot! We can only hope that his enduring fashion house will wake up and smell the espresso and honor his fashion forward thinking by creating some cruelty-free sandals for the women of today.
Until then, there are these…
These vegan wedge sandals by Siamese Dream were real standouts when I did my research because I didn’t come across any other sandals quite like them.
