Sandal season is officially here! And, Ladies, in case you haven’t realized it yet, we are living in the Golden Age of Vegan Shoes because I’ve never seen such an amazing selection of women’s vegan sandals.
Before we start looking at these lovelies, can we all just take a moment to give a big, standing ovation to all of the animal advocates out there who have gotten us to this point in human evolution? That includes the nonprofits – PETA, The Humane Society, Mercy for Animals, Direct Action Everywhere, and many others – plus, the activists, the designers, and all of you who ever went to a shoe website and typed the word “vegan” into the search bar and refused to buy anything else when it returned zero results. Well done!
We do still have some evolving to do when it comes to making vegan sandals that are also Earth-friendly. While there are now a number of great brands making vegan flip flops that are made with recycled and other eco-friendly materials, when it comes to other sandals – it’s still hard to find styles made with sustainable materials. When I do find those vegan shoe brands that are also emphasizing sustainability, I note them with UniGuide’s eco-friendly icon.
One positive that I’ve learned since doing my research on vegan shoes is that these days it’s rare that the adhesives used in shoes are made with animal products. The reason is that synthetic glues simply perform better in shoes – they’re more flexible and last longer than than the glues used in the old days that contained animal byproducts. Needles to say, this is good news for all of us vegan shoe lovers out there!
Happy Summer to you!
