There’s no doubt that celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio have a huge stage from which to share their personal concerns. In Leo’s case, it’s very much an environmental message. In a recent interview with the L.A. Times, he said, “We’re going through an unprecedented shift in the environmental moment – seeing disasters happening faster and at a scary level… We need to bring a voice to these issues, and we have a platform that is unprecedented and unmatched.”

Last November, Leo met with teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg, and in an Instagram post he praised her as a “leader of our time,” ending with: “It was an honor to spend time with Greta. She and I have made a commitment to support one another, in hopes of securing a brighter future for our planet.”

In a more recent post, Leo addressed an environmental concern that many people, other than serious mountaineers, are probably unaware of. The Himalayas are already being heavily impacted by climate change. Referencing an article in the Guardian, he noted, “Shrubs and grasses are springing up around Mount Everest and across the Himalayas, one of the most rapidly heating regions of the planet…”

The increase in vegetation could have an impact on water supplies in the region, and there could be increased flooding in the Hindu Kush, which supplies 1.4 billion people with water.

Last year, Leo co-founded the environmental nonprofit Earth Alliance with billionaire philanthropists Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth. The organization provides grants and environmental educational opportunities and invests in campaigns and films to stop biodiversity loss and climate change. Earth Alliance recently donated $3 million to help with the Australian bushfire crisis.

Whether you follow Leo on social media because you love his movies or you share his concerns about the environment and biodiversity, it’s clear that his superstar status is shedding a bright light on the environmental crises that are threatening life on our planet.

At the time of this post, Leo was just nominated for another Academy Award – his sixth – for his show-stopping performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For the sake of life on this planet, let’s hope he wins, if only so he can give another reality-check Oscar speech.
