Why pollute the planet with a plastic phone case when there are so many cool, eco-friendly phones cases available that are made from more sustainable materials, like bamboo, wood, cork, bioplastic, or recycled materials? When I was shopping for a new phone case, I have to admit, I had my eye on a plastic, glittery one. Then, I got a grip on myself and did some research on why purchasing a plastic phone case would not be a good idea, and why one with a lighter environmental footprint would be better. To get the stats on why I’ll never buy a plastic phone case again, click here to go to bottom of this post. I was very happy to find a variety of innovative, Earth-friendly and sustainable phone cases on the market!

Check out all of these cool, eco-friendly phone cases!

2. I Make the Case Bamboo Phone Case

I Make the Case creates a huge variety of eco-friendly phone cases in laser-engraved bamboo, and they do custom designs as well. I had trouble figuring out which one to present in this post because there are so many beautiful designs – definitely worth checking out on their Etsy shop page.

According to I Make the Case, “Bamboo is revered as ‘eco-friendly’ because it’s fast-growing and can yield 20-times more wood than trees. Bamboo also releases 35% more oxygen into the air than trees of similar size. The Japanese expression wabi-sabi sums up the wonder of bamboo. It means, ‘There’s beauty in imperfection.’ We love that each bamboo skin has its own unique coloration, grain, and flow, and we value the opportunity to be connected to nature with these small treasures. We think it’s the perfect yin, to the high tech iPhone yang!”

I couldn’t have said it better!

Currently I Make the Case fits: Samsung Galaxy S6 and iPhones: 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6s, and 6 Plus.

Price: $25.00 – $35.00

3. Pela Case Bioplastic Phone Case

And then there is the Earth-friendly phone case by Pela Case. Company founder, Jeremy Lang, was raised in Saskatchewan, where most the global supply of oil seed flax is grown. He believed there should be some kind of consumer use for the leftover flax straw once the flax oil is harvested. And he found it odd that the average person replaces their smart phone every 18 months, yet the conventional plastic case used to protect it lasts for hundreds of years. Making the connection, he developed a biodegradable and compostable material based on leftover flax straw, called FlaxsticTM, and the Pela Case was born.

I found this story to be fanfriggingflaxtastic. :o)

Plus, Pela Case is a member of 1% for the Planet, so they donate at least 1% of their sales to environmental non-profits.

Pela Case fits: iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

5. Upcycled Vinyl Record Phone Case by Wrecords by Monkey

I know to some it is sacrilege to destroy a vinyl record. I do understand. I recently sold my entire vinyl collection and it sort of felt like losing 50 pounds – only not from diet and exercise, but from the flu. As soon as I turned my back and walked out of Amoeba Records, I could feel their record buyer jumping up and down with glee and clapping his hands with delight. I felt like throwing up. But the truth was – I was moving and my turntable had broken a few years ago, and I just didn’t listen to the vinyl records as much as they deserved to be listened to…

Ok, I f#$@ed up!

I shouldn’t have sold the entire collection! There is not a day that goes by where I don’t regret what I did!!

Especially when I see cell phone cases made from reclaimed vinyl records. I wonder – could one of those phone cases be one of my records?? Could it be the Ravi Shankar box set or Joe Boogaloo Jones? Imagine my relief to learn that Wrecords by Monkey only uses the road kill of vinyl records –  the scratched up, unusable stuff: “We intake the product that is unsellable and would otherwise be destined for a landfill.” Whew.

Wrecords by Monkey fits: iPhone: 4, 4s, 5, 6, 6 Plus (and also the iPad Mini). Each item is made to order and, depending on availability, you can request certain colors and even record labels.

Price: $25.00

(Wrecords by Monkey also creates other products from upcycled vinyl and CDs. I mean, how cool are these light socket and switch covers?

6. Innovez Bioplastic Phone Case

Innovez makes cases out of sustainable plastic. In this case (yes, pun intended), the plastics are completely organic and non-destructive to the environment. Innovez has developed a chemical compound called EcoPure that allows for accelerated biodegrading of their materials. EcoPure is an FDA approved, 100% organic material that is blended into the plastic during the manufacturing process. This additional step in the processing enables Innovez products to be consumed by the environment, resulting in biomass (rich soil), biogas (anaerobic), and carbon dioxide (aerobic). Their biodegradable technology allows plastics to absorb moisture more readily, which causes expansion and breakage of the polymer chain. In addition, EcoPure promotes microorganisms to colonize in and around the plastic. The microorganisms secrete enzymes, which break down the polymer chain. Once the polymer chain is open, the microbes can use the carbon chain as a source of food and energy. Genius! And it gets better! Innovez donates a portion of their sales to eco-friendly nonprofits.

Currently, Innovez cases fit: Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 4 and 4s, and iPhone 5 and 5s. I have a call in to Innovez to see when and if they’ll be coming out with cases that fit newer phones, like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
Price: $24.95.

Why get a phone case made of sustainable materials?

The Numbers:

Even if just 1% of the people buying phone cases buy plastic ones (or cases made from other undesirable materials), that’s a heck of a lot of plastic going into the landfill (or the ocean, where so much plastic ends up) every 18 months, and staying there – for a very, very long time.

What makes a phone case eco-friendly?

Here are things to look for:

  • Made from natural, sustainable, and easily biodegradable materials, such as bamboo, cork, or sustainably-harvested wood
  • Made of biodegradable plastic or 100% recycled plastic
  • Made of toxic-free materials
  • Carbon-neutral validation
  • Environmental certifications

I’m now convinced – there are things far more important about phone cases than a little sparkly bling!
