I love Easter. It’s always been a happy holiday for me, and I appreciate all the spiritual energy that is felt at this time of the year. But it strikes me as ironic that we celebrate a holiday about spring, renewal, and fertility with a lot of unhealthy, artificial junk: plastic eggs, plastic Easter grass, food coloring, junk food candy, etc. So, in total rebellion to that, I’m voting for bringing back a more Earth-friendly Easter. Here are some ideas!

The Case for Sustainable Baskets (“The Basket Case”)

Since baskets are traditionally woven from natural materials, it seems almost sacrilegious to find Easter baskets made of plastic. A plastic basket is an affront to a timeless tradition, and not to mention – underwater basket weavers everywhere! Boycott the plastic baskets! If only for the simple reason that there are so many gorgeous ones available made from natural materials.

When I think of a traditional Easter basket, it’s one made of willow – not plastic!

English Ivy

I came across this cool site, Rewild Portland, and they have a whole section on baskets made from English Ivy. These sustainable baskets serve the dual purpose of getting an invasive species out of the environment, while creating beautiful baskets.

As a beach lover, I’m a big fan of seagrass. Easter baskets don’t have to come in any particular shape or size – it’s what comes in them that makes it festive. And then you can re-use them until they fade gracefully away into biodegradable lala land.

Easter Grass

As Nancy Reagan would say, “Just say no to grass!” That is, the artificial plastic variety!

Eco Eggs Easter Grass

How can you resists this Eco Eggs Easter Grass? It’s got everything going for it that Earth-friendly Easter grass should.:

  • Made from 100% post recycled paper
  • Comes in pink, yellow, and green
  • Is crinkle cut 1/8″ thick
  • Can be re-used or recycled
  • Made in the USA

Aspen Wood Shavings Grass

And for an even more natural look, I like these aspen tree shavings from Firefly Creative Guy:

Green Edition Easter Basket Grass

One more is Green Edition Easter Basket Grass:

  • Made from 100% recycled paper
  • Comes in a bad with pink, purple, green, and yellow grass
  • Made in the USA

Wooden Eggs

Coloring wooden eggs is more fun than coloring chickens’ eggs because they don’t break and you don’t have to get the chickens’ permission. There are a number of wooden egg suppliers on Amazon and you can find them on many craft supply sites.

Paper Mâché Eggs

I also found these cool paper mâché eggs that you can paint and decorate if you’re looking for something  lighter weight. You can also make your own paper mâché eggs, which I found on this great site Crafting a Green World.

Eco-Friendly Paint

Better than artificial dyes, you’ll want some Earth-friendly, non-toxic paints. I like Glob All Natural Paint Kits because they’re:

  • All natural and non-toxic
  • Made from fruits, vegetables, flowers, and spices
  • Safe for kids ages 3 and up

eco eggs®

If you want the kind of eggs you can put stuff in, but don’t want fossil fuel plastics, try eco eggs. They’re:

  • Made from non-toxic, durable, plant-based plastic
  • Made from 100% renewable content
  • Fully compostable after use
  • Made in the USA

Did you think I was going to forget the bunnies? Not a chance!

John N. Tree Organic Toy Bunny

John N. Tree makes a number of very sweet, all-natural, organic baby toys and blankets. This little guy is:

  • Non-allergenic polyester filling for sensitive baby skin
  • Machine washable

Organic Tommy Rabbit

I think I might be partial to the organic Tommy Rabbit doll because of his mod top, plus he’s:

  • Hand-crocheted
  • Made from 100% organically grown bamboo yarn

3D Wooden Rabbit Jigsaw Puzzle

And last, but most certainly not least, is this less cuddly but far more mentally challenging bunny – the 3D wooden rabbit jigsaw puzzle made by Poonsawat Toy:

  • Eco-friendly, durable wood
  • Finished non-toxic paint

Happy Easter! Happy Passover! Happy White Day! Happy Spring Break! Happy Spring Equinox!
